Buttrr Social Privacy Policy
Effective Date: September 23, 2026
Buttrr Social is operated by Friendly Ventures LLC, doing business as Buttrr Social ("we," "us," "our"). This policy explains what information we collect, why, how long we keep it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.
As a service for gay men, we hold information that matters deeply: your health information, where you are, and who you talk to. We collect only what the Service needs, show other members only what you choose to put on your profile, and delete on the schedule below.
Quick Summary
- What we collect: your phone number, date of birth, the profile details and photos you choose to add, your messages, your approximate location, your membership status, and basic technical information.
- Why: to run the Service, show you to other members and them to you, deliver your messages, take payment, keep members safe, and meet legal obligations.
- Who sees it: other members see your profile as you fill it in; our service providers process it to run the Service; we never sell it.
- Your controls: edit or remove any profile field, block members, delete conversations, delete your account, request a copy of your information.
Information We Collect
Information you provide
To create an account
- Your mobile phone number, used to sign in and secure your account.
- Your date of birth, used only to confirm you are 18 or older. It is never shown to other members.
On your profile. Every field below is optional and is shown to other members if you fill it in:
- A short headline (we do not ask for your name).
- Age, height, weight, profession, relationship status, body type, body hair, ethnicity.
- What you are here for, and whether you host or travel.
- Vaccination status. See "Sensitive Information" below.
- Social media handles and links.
- Home city and neighborhood. Neighborhood is chosen from a list; we never derive it from your location.
- Public photos, up to five.
- Your availability ("now" or "later").
In conversations
- Messages you send, including text, photos from your private library, voice messages, your phone number if you choose to share it, and a location if you choose to send one.
- Your private photo library, which is visible only to you until you send a photo to someone.
Reports and requests. If you report a member, we keep the report. If you write to us, we keep the correspondence.
Information collected automatically
- Location. If you allow it, your browser gives us your coordinates. Before saving them we round them to a grid roughly half a kilometre across. We use them only to work out distances to other members, shown in half-mile steps. Your coordinates are never shown to anyone. You can decline location access; distances will then show as unavailable.
- Activity. When you last used the Service, so that other members can see whether you are online. Whether you have read a message, so the sender can see a read indicator.
- Interactions. Members you have saved, hidden, blocked, or liked, and which profiles have been shown to you, used to run the discovery grid.
- Technical information. IP address, browser type, and error and access logs kept by our hosting provider.
Payment information
When you pay, your card details go directly to Braintree, a PayPal service. We never see or store your card number. We keep your plan, membership status, billing dates, and a customer reference from Braintree.
Sensitive Information
Vaccination status and sexual orientation are sensitive. Here is exactly how we handle them:
- You choose whether to add them. They are optional and blank by default.
- If you add them, they appear on your profile to signed-in members who can see you, the same as any other profile field.
- We do not verify them, and we do not use them for anything except displaying your profile as you set it. They are never used for advertising, ranking, or any automated decision about you.
- You can change or remove them at any time in Settings.
- They are deleted with your account.
We are not a healthcare provider, and this information is not medical advice.
How We Use Information
- To run the Service: sign you in, show your profile, deliver messages, compute distances, and show who is online.
- To take payment and manage your membership.
- To keep members safe: screen public profile photos and headlines with automated moderation tools, review reports, enforce the Community Guidelines, and prevent banned members from returning.
- To respond to your requests and support questions.
- To comply with the law.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
Who Sees Your Information
Other members
Signed-in members with an active membership can see your profile as you filled it in, your public photos, your distance from them in half-mile steps, your neighborhood if you chose one, and whether you are online. Members you have blocked, or who have blocked you, cannot see you at all. Nobody who is not signed in can see any profile.
Service providers
We share information with companies that help us run the Service, only for that purpose:
- Supabase – database, sign-in, and photo and voice-message storage.
- Vercel – hosting for the website.
- Braintree (PayPal) – payment processing and card storage.
- Our SMS provider – delivers the sign-in code to your phone; receives your phone number.
- Sightengine – automated screening of public profile photos and profile headlines when you add them. Images are analysed and are not retained by Sightengine.
- Mapbox – renders the small map image when you send a location in a chat; receives the coordinates you chose to send.
Legal and safety
We may disclose information to comply with law, court orders, or valid legal requests; to protect the safety of members or the public; to investigate fraud or abuse; or to enforce our Terms. We report child exploitation to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
Business transfers
If Friendly Ventures LLC is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred with the business, subject to this policy.
How Long We Keep Information
While your account is active
- Profile, photos, and settings: until you change or remove them.
- Messages, including voice messages and shared photos: 90 days after sending, then they expire and their media is removed. The record is permanently deleted 180 days after sending. The window between is used only for safety reviews of reported conversations.
- Deleted conversations: deleting a conversation hides it from both people immediately. The messages are kept only for safety reviews of reported conversations and are removed on the same 90- and 180-day schedule.
- Location: replaced each time your browser sends a new position; only the latest rounded position is kept.
- Reports you file or that are filed about you: kept for safety.
When you delete your account
- Your profile, public and private photos, voice messages, conversations, saved and blocked lists, and membership record are deleted immediately.
- Your membership is cancelled with Braintree immediately.
- We keep a one-way hash of your phone number so a banned person cannot return, and the date and reason you gave for leaving.
- Reports involving your account and moderation records are kept, with the link to your account removed.
- The record that you passed the age check is kept, with the link to your account removed.
- Hosting and error logs are retained by our providers for a limited period on their own schedules.
Legal holds. In rare cases we retain information longer where required for legal proceedings or investigations.
Your Choices and Rights
- Edit or remove profile information at any time in Settings.
- Decline location access in your browser; the Service still works.
- Block any member; blocking is mutual in effect.
- Delete conversations for both people.
- Delete your account in Settings → Delete Account. This is immediate and cannot be undone.
- Request a copy of your information, or correction of it, by emailing hello@buttrr.com from the phone number on the account or with enough information to verify you. We respond within 30 days.
- Opt out of text messages. We send sign-in codes and, rarely, notices required by these policies; we do not send marketing texts.
Residents of California and other states with privacy laws
You may have the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to request its deletion, to correct it, and to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context advertising. Make requests at hello@buttrr.com. You may designate an authorized agent; we will verify the request with you directly.
Residents of the European Economic Area and United Kingdom
The Service is offered in the United States. If you use it from the EEA or UK, we process your information on the basis of performing our contract with you, our legitimate interests in running a safe service, your consent for sensitive information you choose to add, and legal obligations. You may access, correct, delete, or port your information and object to or restrict processing by contacting hello@buttrr.com, and you may complain to your local supervisory authority.
Cookies and Browser Storage
We use a cookie to keep you signed in. We use your browser's local storage for a few preferences, such as whether you have answered the "now or later" prompt this session. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. Because these are strictly necessary for the Service, there is no consent banner to click through.
Security
Information is encrypted in transit and at rest by our providers. Access to your data is restricted by account: other members can only ever read what the Service is designed to show them, and this is enforced in our database, not only in the app. Card numbers are held by Braintree, not us. No system is perfectly secure; if we learn of a breach affecting your information we will notify you as the law requires.
Children
Buttrr Social is for adults only. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that a member is under 18, we delete the account. If you believe a minor has an account, email hello@buttrr.com.
Changes to This Policy
We will post changes here and update the effective date. For material changes we will notify you by text message or in the Service at least 30 days before they take effect.
